FAQ’s – ACUPUNCTURE

Acupuncture is a tried and tested form of medicine that has been practised for over 2,000 years. It involves placing very fine, sterile needles at specific points on the body to influence the nervous system, circulation, and the body’s connective tissue network, known as fascia.

Current research suggests that acupuncture works by stimulating nerve pathways, improving blood flow, and triggering the release of the body’s natural chemical messengers. Needling also affects fascia — the interconnected tissue that surrounds muscles and organs — helping to reduce tension, improve mobility, and support the body’s overall regulatory processes.

In the UK, acupuncture has been used within the NHS, including in pain clinics, mental health support, pre and post surgery wards and some GP practices, reflecting its recognition as a safe and evidence-informed treatment approach.

Acupuncture is tailored to the individual and offers a gentle, non-invasive way to support a wide range of physical and emotional concerns

Acupuncture needles are incredibly fine, so they are completely different to the needles used by your doctor. You may feel a slight sensation as the needle is inserted, which is usually described as a mild tingling, dull ache or heavy feeling. These sensations are usually brief in nature.

Often people find treatment very relaxing and some fall asleep. I will talk you through everything in your first appointment and you can reach out with any questions/ concerns before booking.

Something comfortable and loose is preferred and easy access to the arms and legs is helpful.

If you can’t for whatever reason, that is no issue as I have a gown that you can change into.

Eating a snack or a light meal before your treatment is advised.

Avoid drinking alcohol the day of your treatment, and avoid caffeinated drinks at least a couple of hours beforehand. After treatment, drink extra water and rest, if possible.

During your first session, we’ll talk through your main concerns along with your general health and lifestyle. I’ll ask about your symptoms and medical history to build a full picture of what’s going on.

Some questions may seem unrelated at first, but they help me understand the wider patterns behind your current issue. Because of this holistic approach, people often notice improvements in several areas of their health, not just the main concern they came in with.

I will also look at your tongue and feel your pulse, as both offer useful diagnostic insights.

You’ll receive a treatment during your initial visit, and then I’ll cultivate a plan for follow-up sessions. Before each appointment, we’ll review your progress so your treatment can be adjusted to support your needs as they evolve.

The number of treatments varies from person to person, but as a general guide, I usually recommend committing to around five sessions to properly assess how your body responds and to build therapeutic momentum.

More acute or recent issues may improve more quickly, sometimes within 1–3 treatments.

Chronic conditions — especially those that have developed over months or years — often require a longer course of care. Concerns such as long-term pain or fertility support typically benefit from regular sessions spaced over several weeks or months to help the body restore lasting balance.

We’ll review your progress as we go and tailor the treatment plan to what your body needs.

Yes. Acupuncture is often used alongside other medical treatments, including conventional medicine, physical therapy and massage.

Acupuncture can help to alleviate symptoms caused by the side effects of some medications.

Acupuncture is one of the safest medical treatments on offer in the UK today. Side effects are very rare.

The needles used are sterile, single-use and very thin. Strict hygiene practices are followed in accordance with our membership organisation.

FAQ’S – FACIAL ACUPUNCTURE

It’s a natural, non-invasive treatment that uses ultra fine acupuncture needles on the face and body to support skin health, boost circulation, encourage collagen production, and improve overall tone and radiance.

The needles stimulate the body’s healing response, increasing blood flow and nutrient delivery to the skin.

This helps reduce tension, soften fine lines, and create a more lifted, refreshed appearance. Body points are included to support internal balance and overall wellbeing.

Most people feel little to no discomfort. The needles are extremely fine, and many clients find the treatment deeply relaxing.

No—there is zero downtime. You can return to your day immediately after your session, feeling relaxed and rejuvenated.

People often notice improved skin tone, a natural glow, reduced tension, softening of fine lines, smoother texture, and an overall feeling of relaxation and balance.

While you may notice a difference after the first session, results are cumulative. A series of 10-12 treatments are recommended for deeper, longer-lasting changes in both skin and wellbeing.

Each treatment includes facial and body acupuncture, a lifting facial massage, and high-quality nourishing oils to enhance circulation, sculpt the facial contours, and leave your skin feeling refreshed.

Please arrive with a clean face that is free from makeup and lotions and wear loose, comfortable clothing.

Yes. When performed by a qualified acupuncturist, Facial Enhancement Acupuncture is safe, gentle, and entirely natural.

AcuCalm Ear acupuncture (1 to 1 and group sessions)

Ear acupuncture is a gentle treatment that uses very fine needles placed at specific points on the ear. These points are linked with areas of the nervous system involved in stress, emotional regulation, and the body’s natural calming responses.

Ear acupuncture is widely used to support relaxation, ease anxiety, reduce feelings of overwhelm, and help with sleep, low mood, trauma and general emotional balance. Many people also find it supportive for cravings or patterns related to addiction, as it can promote steadiness and grounding during periods of change.

I offer ear acupuncture as one-to-one sessions, as well as small, low-cost group sessions on Sunday evenings, making it an accessible way to receive regular, calming support.

FAQ’s – EAR ACCUPUNCTURE

1 to 1 treatment- We will have a brief consultation to discuss your general health and your wellbeing goal(s).

I will then insert up to five needles in each ear and you will be given around 45 minutes to lie down and relax in a peaceful setting.

Typically the group session does not involve a consultation (unless you wish to have a phone conversation with me prior to the session). Upon arrival to the session, you will be offered a herbal tea and given a comfortable reclining chair to sit in.

A blanket and eye mask are also provided. Up to five needles are inserted in each ear and you will be given around 40 minutes to lie back and relax in a peaceful setting. Feedback from this group has been overwhelmingly positive!

It is recommended to commit to around 4-6 sessions as treatments often have a cumulative effect in re-balancing the nervous system.

This combination of auricular points have been utilised and studied extensively. Several UK NHS hospitals (including Gloucester hospital) have used ear acupuncture as a complementary therapy for people with anxiety.

Enhances relaxation and prepares tight tissue for deeper therapeutic work.

FAQ’s – FIRE CUPPING

Fire cupping is a hands-on therapy that uses briefly warmed glass cups to create gentle suction on the skin. The cups form a natural vacuum that lightly lifts the skin and underlying tissues to relieve tension and strain.

The lifting action of the cups encourages fresh blood and oxygen circulation, helps ease tight fascia and muscles, and supports the body’s own healing and recovery processes. Many athletes utilise this therapy to speed up their recovery time so that they can keep training and performing at a high level.

People describe the experience as warm, relaxing, and deeply releasing—like tension is being drawn out rather than pressed in. You’ll feel a gentle pulling sensation as the cups lift the tissue- firm but not painful. The decompressing effect can be felt immediately.

Keep the cupped areas warm and covered for the rest of the day.

The skin is more open and sensitive to cold and drafts after treatment.

Avoid saunas, hot tubs, alcohol, and intense exercise for the next 24 hours.

Your circulation is already activated, so giving your body a little downtime helps it stay in “recovery mode” and make the most of the treatment.

Stay hydrated.

Drinking water supports tissue recovery and can help flush out the metabolic byproducts released during treatment.

Expect temporary marks.

Those circular cupping marks are normal and usually fade within a few days to a week. They’re not bruises; they’re just a natural response to the suction.

Listen to your body.

Mild tenderness or warmth is common. If you feel sore, a warm shower, gentle stretching, or light movement can help.

EAR SEEDS

Comfortable, natural, and easy to wear, ear seeds offer a simple way to support your wellbeing as a standalone treatment or as an added boost between appointments.

By providing light, continuous pressure to key points on the ear, ear seeds can help support relaxation, reduce stress and anxiety, improve sleep, and encourage a calm, balanced state. Many people also find them helpful for focus, managing cravings, and maintaining wellbeing between acupuncture sessions.

Ear seeds are a gentle, needle-free form of ear therapy, using small pellets applied to specific points on the ear. The seeds I use are 24k gold-plated with a clear adhesive backing — subtle enough for everyday wear, yet still beautifully refined. Ear seeds can be worn for up to six days, staying comfortably in place without disrupting your daily routine — you can shower, exercise, and go about your day as usual.
