Acupuncture

What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a key component of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), originating over 2,000 years ago in China. It involves inserting very fine needles into specific points on the body to stimulate the flow of Qi (pronounced chee) and support the body’s natural healing abilities. In the Western field, it is increasingly recognised as an effective treatment for pain management, stress relief, and various chronic conditions, with numerous studies supporting its benefits. Acupuncture is currently used by the NHS for pain management, anxiety and pre/post surgery.
Acupuncture needles are extremely fine, about the width of a hair, which makes them much thinner than the needles used for injections. Around 20 acupuncture needles fit inside the diameter of a hypodermic needle! Most people feel little to no sensation during insertion, though some may experience a mild, tingling, or warming sensation around the needle site, which is generally temporary.
Other modalities used alongside acupuncture treatment
Moxibustion
Moxibustion is an ancient therapeutic technique commonly used in acupuncture treatment. It involves the burning of moxa (dried mugwort) near or on specific acupuncture points to warm and stimulate the flow of energy in the body. The heat from moxibustion helps to improve circulation, alleviate pain, and promote healing. It's particularly effective for treating conditions related to cold or stagnant energy, such as chronic pain, digestive issues, or low immunity.
Cupping
Cupping is a therapeutic technique often used alongside acupuncture to promote healing and enhance circulation. It involves placing special cups on the skin, creating a vacuum that draws the skin and underlying tissue into the cup. This suction helps to increase blood flow, relieve muscle tension, and stimulate the body’s natural healing processes. Cupping is particularly effective for easing chronic pain, improving respiratory function, and addressing issues like muscle tightness and stiffness.
Electro-acpuncture
Electro-acupuncture is a modern variation of traditional acupuncture that involves applying a small electrical current to the needles inserted at specific acupuncture points. This gentle stimulation can enhance the therapeutic effects of acupuncture by promoting deeper energy flow, improving circulation, and accelerating the body’s natural healing processes. Electro-acupuncture is commonly used to treat pain, muscle tension, and conditions like arthritis, as well as to support the healing of injuries.
Guasha
Gua Sha involves using a smooth-edged tool along the skin to stimulate blood flow, release muscle tension, and reduce inflammation. Gua Sha is particularly effective for treating muscle pain, stiffness, and respiratory issues.
